How to Save Energy this Winter

As cold temperatures make their way to Texas, it’s important for consumers to be aware of simple steps they can take to protect against high energy costs. Severe winter weather conditions prevailing in the North, West and other areas of Texas can significantly increase your electricity usage and bills. We want to highlight a few simple energy saving tips that can help keep utility bills under control

Energy Saving Tips for Winter

  • Set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower, or use programmable thermostats to set your home to a cooler temperature when not at home. Every degree of extra heating can increase energy usage 3 to 5 percent.
  • The Sun is your friend – keep blinds and window coverings open during the day to take advantage of free solar heat. Make sure you close blinds and window coverings at night.
  • Limit your use of space heaters. Using large amounts of energy space heaters can be responsible for home heating fires.
  • Avoid heating unused rooms by closing doors and warm air supply registers.
  • Caulk, seal, and weather-strip openings from your home to the outside.
  • Be a good neighbor – make sure to check in on elderly neighbors during especially cold conditions or power outages to make sure they’re safe and comfortable.
